In Outlander, the historical drama time-traveling novel and television series, the main character Jamie, throughout the years, holds onto a toy snake carved for him out of wood by his older brother William, who tragically died of smallpox at age 11.

Today, in the Chippewa Valley, members of the West Wisconsin Wood Carvers Guild, bring wood to life in a variety of forms: butterflies, birds, bears, elk, fish, Santa, and other Christmas ornaments, trees, as well as intricately patterned Old World boxes and containers.

To share this fantastic, creative – and dare we say, addictive – hobby, the West Wisconsin Wood Carvers Guild will be hosting a Carve-In on the Chippewa on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022 from 10am to 4pm at the VFW (1300 Starr Avenue) in Eau Claire.

Admission is free and there will be door prizes. Members will demonstrate their craft, and used tools and books will be for sale. The club meets regularly in Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls, and provides classes and training for all levels of wood carving.

Veteran chip carvers and Eau Claire members Jan Jenson and Charlene Lynum have even written books about chip carving. Lynum with her husband Kim published the Chip Carving Starter Guide, Jenson also an author of two books: Blue Ribbon Chip Carving: Old World Style Patterns and More Blue Ribbon Chip Carving.

Additional info is available on West Wisconsin Wood Carvers Guild's website wwwcg.org and its Facebook page.
