WHEELING — The Oglebay Woodcarvers Show has returned to its original location in Oglebay Park’s Pine Room at the Crispin Center after a one-year relocation. This 43rd annual carving experience will feature numerous local and distant carvers exhibiting many works of wood art creations.

This Labor Day weekend’s annual show dates are Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 3 and 4. The Carving Show hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and the Sunday show is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.. The event, as usual, is free to the general public.

There is no charge to stroll through the 50 tables to scrutinize and admire the wood sculptures and whittlings of many talented local and visiting professional carvers. The Pine Room is air-conditioned and wheelchair accessible with adequate parking space.

“Upon entry at the show site, each visitor will receive a free raffle ticket for a chance to win a nice, locally produced wood carving,” show chairman Clark Adams said.

Drawings will be once every hour during the show and the winner must be present to win. This raffle is well accepted by those who have won in the past, and some even show appreciation by seeking out the carver who produced the carving, Adams noted.

Talented carvers from many states will join the local carvers as they come together to highlight their artistic creations from various species of wood with most carvings presented for sale.

Most past exhibitors and some new ones will be displaying a vast variety of beautiful wood carvings from birds to caricatures of people, animals, dragons, and even a white-bearded Santa with his helpful elves. Items will be on display, and many will be available for purchase.

Heading the list will be some fine architectural and intricate works by Mike Allen, of Belleview, Ohio, and Rich Beekman of Shadyside, displaying a vast array of carved useful kitchen spoons and forks.

These are always in demand for the family cook. Visiting husband and wife carvers from Alden, N.Y., Dot and Ken Kohl, will have a diverse display of works from caricatures to dragons. Local carvers Susan Dorsch and Jay Nicolella will show their artistic abilities, as well.

“These are all worth your time to check out,” Adams said.

The marketing areas include pro knife designer and builder John Dunkle from Archbold, Ohio, will be selling his vast array of specialty knives and gouges in assorted sizes and shapes. Dunkle always gives tips on sharpening tools, and for a small fee will sharpen visitors’ tools. There will be a vast display of other carving tools, aids, books, patterns and supplies by Bob Stadtlander of Mantua, Ohio. A wood supplier from Alliance, Ohio, will also be offering numerous types of carving wood cut in various sizes for sale.

A special raffle with some top prizes will be offered for those willing to buy a chance on a Sunday night through Thursday night stay at a deluxe cabin in Oglebay Park. There are also two second prizes of $100 Oglebay Park gift cards, and three prizes of $50 gift cards. Drawings will be held after the carving show on Sunday, Sept. 4. Winners need not be present.

In addition to the Woodcarvers show, many other events will be taking place this holiday weekend at Oglebay Park. The park offers many indoor and outdoor family activities, from Revolutionary War reenactments to swimming, golfing, live music, beautiful picnic sites and much more.

“West Virginia’s friendship is on display at Oglebay Park in September,” Adams said.

For visitors entering the park, follow the Woodcarvers signs to the Crispin Center Pine Room.

The Oglebay Woodcarvers Guild is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of the art of woodcarving through instruction, exhibitions and demonstrations. Membership is drawn from the tri-state region of West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The club meets twice weekly (Monday evening and Thursday morning) for carving sessions in the Stifel Fine Arts Center on National Road in Wheeling.
