The original Apple computer, made by the company's co-founders Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs in 1976, sold for $400,000 (£294,990) at an American auction.

The rare Hawaiian koa wooden box Apple-1-still in operation-is one of only 200 products manufactured and sold in kit form.

The John Moran auction house in California said that the computer had only two owners, a university professor and his students, and he sold his machine for $650.

The sale includes the user manual and Apple software on two tapes.

"This is the holy grail for collectors of vintage electronics and computer technology," Apple-1 expert Corey Cohen told the Los Angeles Times before the auction in Monrovia near Los Angeles on Tuesday.

"It does excite a lot of people."

The auction-model koa wooden boxes were added by ByteShop, a pioneering early computer retailer in California, which received approximately 50 Apple-1 machines.

Jobs, Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne founded Apple in a garage in California on April 1, 1976.

To fund the production of Apple 1, Jobs sold his Volkswagen minibus, and Wozniak sold his HP-65 calculator for $500.

In 1976, these machines were sold for US$666.66, which is said to be because Wozniak likes to repeat numbers.

It is believed that there are about 20 such computers in the world still capable of running.

The machine at auction is not the best-selling Apple-1 computer-this distinction belongs to the working version sold at the Bonhams auction in New York in 2014 for $905,000.
